William J. 'Bill' Smith

William J. "Bill" Smith, 80, of Monticello, passed away at 4:10 am, November 19, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born on January 16, 1934 in Auburn, TN to the late Ray A. and Briddie (Bryson) Smith. On June 29, 1957 he married Margaret Owens in Reynolds, who survives. He was a 1951 graduate of Lascassas High School in Lascassas, TN and a 1956 graduate of Browns Business College & Law School in Peoria, IL. Bill worked in several capacities over the years as: Space Program Supervisor at NASA in Phoenix, Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Peoria, IL, owner-operator semi driver leased to Daily Express, manager of Wabash Valley Hog Market, contractor for Moorman Feed, owner of a used car lot, and Director of White County Recycling. He was honored to have received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Recycling while Director of White County Recycling. He was a member of the American Legion, a city councilman, special deputy on the White County Sheriff's Department, and served on the board of the White County Council on Aging. Also surviving is daughter, Janiece A. (Clark) Nelson of Hillsboro, OR; four sisters, Nora Gordon of Phoenix, AZ, Pauline (Terry) Brower of Murfreesboro, TN, JoAnn (Bud) McDonald of Bonita Springs, FL, and Betty Sue (Ron) Barlow of Francesville; three brothers, Fred (Carolyn) Smith of Wolcott, Ray Jr. (Patty) Smith of Remington, Jerry (Julie) Smith of Rossville; many nieces and nephews: special nieces, Nancy Spurgeon, Rhonda Miller, Kim Krejci, Karen Dubea; special nephews, Mike Smith, Marty Huseman; and beloved dog, Rocky. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Marvin Smith, Charles Smith, and his beloved dog, Sheba. Visitation will be from 4 pm until 8 pm, on Friday, November 21, 2014 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello and also from 11 am until the time of services at 1 pm on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at the funeral home with Rev. Keith Raderstorf officiating. Burial will follow at the Yeoman Cemetery with full military rites. Memorial contributions may be given to White County Council on Aging, Salvation Army, or Happy Tails in Buffalo, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
