Wallace Reid Neal, 92, of Lafayette, formerly of Chalmers, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at I U Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette.

He was born on July 10, 1934 in Monticello to the late Byron and Lucille (Gallinger) Neal. On February 19, 1955 he married Kathleen Sulfridge at Pines Church near Michigan City. She preceded him in death on July 7, 2017.

He was a 1952 graduate of Chalmers High School. While in high school, he was a star athlete in both basketball and softball, breaking several school and county records.He went on to serve in the Army National Guard. After graduating, he farmed with his dad and worked at RCA and the CO-OP in Chalmers. After he began farming full time, he drove school bus and worked at Hicks Gas in the winters. 

He was a member of Chalmers Community Church. He enjoyed gardening, golf, woodworking and sitting on his swing. He cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, Joel R. Neal of Lafayette, Brian Neal of Ft. Wayne; son-in-law, Steve Marconett of Brookston; grandchildren, Charlie Wingate, Kali (Kyle) Bledsoe, Sarah Neal, Natalie Neal, Matthew Neal, Elizabeth Neal; great grandchildren, Kobie Whitaker (companion Danielle Brinson), Achilles, Leo; great-great grandchild, Kaia Whitaker.

In addition to his parents and wife, Kathleen, he was also preceded in death by daughters, Cheryl Wingate, Gail Marconett; brother, Tommy Neal; grandson, Joshua Whitaker.

Private graveside services will be held at Yeoman Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Salvation Army to benefit the Monticello and White County area.
