Vickie Abernathy, 61, of Monticello, passed away on September 6, 2025 at IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette.
She was born on September 10, 1963 to the late Ronald Lee and Fossie (Willoughby) McElroy.
Vickie was a 1982 graduate of North White High School where she participated in track & field doing high jump. She also played basketball where she won an award for best free throw percentage.
After high school, she married Kevin Vice and had the most beautiful baby girl in the history of baby girls (I might be biased). After they parted ways, she went on to build a life for her and her baby.
After a few years she met and married the love of her life, Roger Abernathy. They were married for over 35 years. He survives.
She worked at a lot of different jobs over the years and was a very hard worker. She worked at Monon Trailer, Monticello Healthcare as a CNA, Indiana Packers, Twin Lakes as a lunch lady, and most recently at Rural King as the beloved “Chicken Vickie”.
Vickie had one daughter, Joni (Vice) Rivera. Joni and husband Greg gave her two perfect grandchildren; Cadence and John, that she loved more than life itself. She also had two stepchildren, Crystal and Roger.
Vickie loved with her whole heart. She loved animals, except mice, her family, some good comfort food, and Halloween was her favorite holiday.
She will be missed by many but we rest easy in knowing she has been reunited with her mother, father, and brother. And, we know that we will see her again.
Visitation will be Monday, September 15, 2025 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 am at the funeral home with Chad Hostetler officiating.
Burial will be in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be offered to Ronald McDonald House. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
