Terry Joe Van Meter, 75, of Shipshewana, IN, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis.
Terry was born on June 5, 1950 in Lafayette, IN to the late Marion 'Butch' and Mary 'Rusty' (Pearson) Van Meter. On February 25, 1978 he married Terese 'Terri Sue' Kreps in Chicago, IL, with whom he spent the rest of his life with.
Terry was a 1968 graduate of Frontier High School. He then went on to graduate from Purdue University with a bachelor degree in food technology in 1972. He served in the United States Army from 1972-1975. He was first stationed in Fort Sheridan, IL where he served as a food sanitation inspector and was then deployed to Myorenji, Japan and served as a dairy inspector for the troops. Terry’s career then took him to Oklahoma, Missouri, and all over Indiana before finally retiring in 2012.
Terry found joy in simple pleasures and was always ready for the next adventure. He loved spending time outdoors, especially near water or campfires. He enjoyed genealogy and Bible studies. He had a witty sense of humor that could bring a smile to all. He cherished his family, friends, but most of all his grandchildren. His colorful personality left a lasting impression on those around him.
In addition to his wife, Terri Sue, he is survived by children, Caleb Van Meter of Anderson, Joshua Van Meter (Kamara) of Muncie, Johanna Van Meter (Agustin) of Anderson; sister, Becky (Marty) Cotterman of Monticello; grandchildren, Julian, Luna, Otis, Kaleb and Dash. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Lorraine "Lorry" Van Meter.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the time of services at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello with his brother-in-law Marty Cotterman officiating.
Burial will follow in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to Stone Lake Conservation Club: with Terry Van Meter in the memo. Envelopes will available at the funeral home. Contributions may also be mailed directly to P.O. Box 325 Middlebury, IN. 46540
