Robert L. Fairhurst, 90, of Kissimmee, FL, formerly of Monticello passed away at 9:08 pm, Sunday, February 8, 2015 at Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, FL. He was born on June 24, 1924, in Terre Haute, IN to the late Clarence and Gertrude (Woodsmall) Fairhurst. On September 12, 1952 he married Dorothy Palmer in Terre Haute, and she preceded him in death September 18, 2003. On May 21, 2007, he married Linda Johnson Treat in Valdosta, GA, and she survives. He was a 1943 graduate of Honey Creek High School. Mr. Fairhurst was a 1947 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College where is received his BS, and a 1954 graduate of Indiana State University where he earned a Masters of Chemistry and Physics degree. He was baptized in the Methodist Church, and attended the Monticello Methodist Church. Mr. Fairhurst taught in various school systems located throughout northern and central Indiana: 1957-1959 Clay City, IN 1959-1963 Veetersburg, IN 1963-1975 Monticello, IN 1975-1977 Clinton Prairie, IN 1978-1989 Gary, IN, where he retired. Mr. Fairhurst had served as Master of Libanus Lodge #154 F&AM in Monticello. Mr. Fairhurst either headed or participated in so many school related and community functions they are too numerous to mention; everything from organizing and judging the yearly science fairs throughout the Twin Lakes Corporation, to being a steadfast ticket taker at the high school basketball games. No job was too small or effort too great, Mr. Fairhurst was a man of many talents and was always willing to lend his expertise, his time and his labor. Surviving Mr. Fairhurst are one brother, Benjamin (Alice) Fairhurst of Terre Haute, three nieces, Susan (Henry) Hughes Evansville, IN, Jill (Greg) Hall Carmel, IN and Dr. Ann (Mark Houdershel) Fairhurst, as well as great-nieces and nephews. His parents, Clarence and Gertrude (Woodsmall) Fairhurst, as well as a sister, Jane (John) Arrnik, preceded Mr. Fairhurst in death. Mr. Fairhurst will be interred next to his wife Dorothy at the Riverview I.O.O.F Cemetery in Monticello, IN. No contributions are requested; rather, it was his specific request that each person who fell under his tutelage should diligently strive to positively impact the life of another.
