Phyllis Hitner, 94, of Monticello and Battleground, passed away on April 23, 2026 at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Delphi.

She was born on November 17, 1931 in Lafayette to the late Charles and Edna (Tesmer) Corns. On November 4, 1950 she married John Allen “Jack” Hitner. He preceded her in death on September 2, 1965.

Phyllis was a former member of the Monticello Christian Church serving as church secretary for a time. She was a member of the Past Bowlers of Monticello and a member of the American Legion since 1966. Phyllis was a 1949 graduate of Battle Ground High School. After graduation she worked at Sunshine Farms on Security Post in Virginia while Jack was in the service. She was also secretary at Battle Ground School Corporation. She worked at Chesebrough-Ponds, Millers Department Store as a bookkeeper, and as Monticello City Clerk Treasurer for two and a half terms, and then at Battle Ground Town Hall for thirteen years.

She dearly loved her grandsons and great grandchildren. She especially enjoyed spending time with family. Phyllis loved her animals, Bert, Bandi, Mandy and Molly. Phyllis enjoyed her flowers, bird watching and mushroom hunting with her late husband, Jack and Lee and Dick Cronch.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa R. (Gary) Armstrong, husband; grandsons, Jonathan and Tyler Armstrong; great grandchildren, Kohen, Lauren and Pearl Armstrong.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Jack, she was preceded in death by her son, John Craig Hitner; sister, Glenda Gerhart; brother, Mark Corns; her best friends of over 50 years, Lee and Dick Cronch. She, Lee, Dick and Jack spent a lot of time mushroom hunting and Jack was an avid fisherman. 

Phyllis and Lisa were animal lovers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are encouraged to Almost Home Humane Society or to Happy Tails.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 1, 2026 at Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery with Dr. James Elliott officiating. Casual dress is appreciated.
