Marvin Dean Gwin, 85, of Monticello, passed away at 10:09 pm, Friday, September 26, 2014 at I.U. Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette. He was born on March 2, 1929 in Jasper County near Pleasant Ridge to the late Leslie Sherman and Frances Elizabeth (Martin) Gwin. On September 8, 1956, he married Alberta Phares in Mount Ayr and she survives. Marvin was a 1947 graduate of Rensselaer High School and spent his life farming in Jasper and White Counties until his retirement in 1998. He was a hard working man devoted to his family and farm. He cherished his wife of fifty-eight years, and special times spent with his son and grandsons. He was a member of Pike Creek Church of the Brethren. Marvin enjoyed sports and was an avid fan of the Bears and Cubs. He played on numerous baseball and softball teams when he was young. He held the shot put record for Rensselaer High School which remained unbroken for several years. He enjoyed bowling and bowled on several leagues in Rensselaer and Monticello. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre. Most recently he played dart ball for Pike Creek Church of the Brethren and was a "player-coach" on several White County league championship teams. Also surviving is his son, Marvin D. (Nancy) Gwin Jr. of Avon; and grandsons, Caleb and Lucas Gwin. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Martin S. and Dale L. Gwin; sister, Donna I. Hoeferlin; and infant daughter, Rochelle Gwin. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm (EDT), Monday, September 29, 2014 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am (EDT), Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Jason Metzinger of the Pike Creek Church of the Brethren officiating. Private burial will follow at Weston Cemetery in Rensselaer. Memorial contributions may be given to Pike Creek Church of the Brethren or to White County Food Pantry with envelopes available at the funeral home.
