John Andrew Mitchell

John Andrew Mitchell, 76, of Monticello, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on November 5, 1947 in Rensselaer to the late Wilbur and Eva (Beaver) Mitchell. On November 23, 1968 he married Linda McKay at the First Presbyterian Church in Rensselaer.  She survives.

He was a 1965 graduate of Remington High School and went on to serve in the United States Army as a company clerk during the Viet Nam era. After John got out of the service, he worked as a Monticello police officer and later as Chief of Police. He worked for INDOT at the State Highway Department for several years on the road crew.  Post retirement, John worked for Mitchell Disposal as a truck driver and continued side jobs over the years to remain active.  He always had the desire to stay busy.  

He was a member of the FOP, American Legion, Libanus Lodge #154 F&Am where he served as Secretary since 2008, and a 32 degree member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. John was awarded the Order of Service to Masonry from the Indiana Grand Lodge.  He had been a Mason for 49 years and was looking forward to his 50 year Masonic membership. He was Vice chair of the Democratic party and served on the White County Election Board.  He was a proud supporter of Little League in the 80's and was instrumental in construction of the concession stand and announcer's booth at William Guthrie Field located on South Street behind Oaklawn Elementary School.   He also served on the board of PWRTC. He was a fan of NASCAR, especially Jeff Gordon. He loved reading and enjoyed politics. He liked his fishing trips to Canada. He was a jack of all trades and master of none.  

Along with his wife, Linda of Monticello, he is survived by his children, Dane Mitchell, Jeremy (Lori) Mitchell, and Christina (Merrill) Van Meter all of Monticello; siblings, Charles Mitchell of Rensselaer, Irene Sullivan of Rensselaer,  Rex (Tammy) Clauss of Remington, Marty (Kay) Garwood of Monticello, Ed (Joan) Mitchell of Monticello, Belle (Lonnie) Martin of Remington; grandchildren, Hanna (Jordan) Guimond, Kalisa (George) Baker, Haley Mitchell, Katherine "Katie" (Andy) Kyburz, Cody Mitchell, Morgen Van Meter, Andrew Mitchell and Tucker Van Meter; great grandchildren, Jaden, Ella, Alexander John "AJ", Theodore, Miles, Oliver, Nellie and Mae; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by siblings, Bill Mitchell, Carol Weston, Roy "Bud" Mitchell, Shelia Westenhaver; father and mother in-law, Raymond (Betty) McKay.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm (EST) on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello.  Masonic service will be at 7 pm (EST) Friday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 pm (EST) at the funeral home with Dr. Jim Elliott of Sitka Baptist Church officiating.

Burial will follow in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery with military rites.  

In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorial contributions are encouraged to a charity of the donor's choice with envelopes available at the funeral home.
