John 'Dog' Austin

John "Dog" Austin, 68, lifelong resident of Monticello, passed away at 8:04 pm, Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Roudebush V.A. Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was born on March 11, 1947 in Monticello to the late Jay and Ruth (Reents) Austin. His marriage was to the former Linda Johnson on February 21, 1990 in Bradenton, FL, and she survives. John was a Vietnam Veteran of the United States Army 1st Cav Division. He served in NAM from1967-1968. He served on Border Patrol in Germany from 1968-1969. He was a life member and 5 time Post Commander at Amvets Post 91, a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Redmens Lodge. John worked for Twin Lakes Enterprises as a crane operator and helped construct many of the rides at Indiana Beach. He retired following 37 years of service. Also surviving are his sons, Troy (Jessica) Austin of Lafayette, and Aaron (Shannon) Austin of Monticello; step children, Amanda (Chuck)Young of Monticello, Michelle (Larry) Bartley of North Carolina, Billy Roland of Logansport, and Jake Roland Lafayette; sister, Carol (William) Jasiulewicz of Florida; grandchildren, Shaelynn, Ashlynn, Luke, Cole, Erica, Shelby, Dalton, CJ, Cambree, Justyn, Bralynn, Sierra, Ret, Logan, Chase and Seth; and two great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jim Austin, beloved St. Bernard, "Maggie". The family will receive guest at the Amvets Post 91 on Saturday, November 21, 2015 from 2pm until 4 pm, for a time of celebration and remembrance. A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held at 4:15 pm in the Amvets Memorial Garden just west of the post with Rev. Nate Pyle officiating. Military rites will be rendered there. Memorial contributions may be given to the Wounded Warriors with envelopes provided at the Amvets Post. Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello is entrusted with care.
