John Alfred Peters, 86, of Monticello, passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his children.
He was born on November 12, 1934 in Chalmers to the late George Alfred and Ida Belle (Reynolds) Peters. On December 4, 1960 he married Betty Hood at the Monticello Christian Church. She preceded him in death on April 25, 1980. On March 13, 1983 he married the former Kathy (Jones) Baker at the Monticello United Methodist Church and she survives.
John was a 1952 graduate of Roosevelt High School. He was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church, where he served as a former trustee. John was a lifelong farmer. He was on the Farmers Elevator board. John was involved in Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed euchre, mowing, and Purdue men's basketball and was a member of the John Purdue Club. John also enjoyed the Purdue Musical Organizations. He loved hunting and fishing and was an avid supporter of his grandchildren's activities. John especially cherished time with his family.
Surviving are his wife, Kathy of Monticello; his children, Liza (John) Kruger of La Vista, NE, John C. (Kathy B.) Peters of Monticello, Connie (Steve) Painter of Lafayette and Donnie (Emily) Peters of Baton Rouge, LA; sister, Arlene Darnstaedt of Monticello; eight grandchildren, Drew Holzer, Taylor Smurr, Jessie Kolar, John M. Peters, Joseph Peters, Brett Painter, Maya Painter and Sarah Tarver; five great-grandchildren; 3 step sons, Joe Baker of River Forest, IL, Tony Baker of Cookeville, TN and Andy Baker of Kokomo; and 7 step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Ronnie Peters; and brother-in-law, Don Darnstaedt.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm (EDT) Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am (EDT) Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Justin Cason of the Monticello United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will follow at the Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery in rural Monticello with military rites rendered there.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Monticello United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association with envelopes available at the funeral home.
