Janet P. "Jan" Carter, 85 of West Lafayette, formerly of Monticello died at 9:15 am, Wednesday, March, 27, 2013 at Westminster Village in West Lafayette. She was born on January 14, 1928 to the late W. Marling White and the former Mildred Grace (Hill) White in Greenville, Ohio. Her mother remarried, after Marling died and was known as Mildred Batcheldor. Jan was married to Robert D. Carter on June 25, 1947 at the Monticello United Methodist Church. Bob preceded her in death on June 23, 2010. Jan was a 1946 graduate of Monticello High School. She attended Adrian College, Adrian, MI for a year. She was a homemaker. She along with her husband, Bob, owned and operated Carter Block for many years. She was a member of Pike Creek Church of the Brethren for more than 60 years where she served as Deaconess, and played the organ and piano at the church for several decades. She was also a member of the Brethren Christian Women's Fellowship. She was a member of the Crystal Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and a 46 year member of the Alpha Nu Music Club. Jan served 5 years as treasurer for the White County Memorial Hospital Foundation and during the Capital Campaign when the addition was added to the old hospital. She was active in the Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary. As a child she, was a Junior Leader in 4-H. She was honored and proud to have played the tuba in the high school band. She had a passion for music and was involved in music throughout her entire life. She enjoyed sewing and traveling. She was also preceded in death by her son Billy Carter and her brother Robert W. White. She is survived by a son, Steven W. (Linda) Carter of Monticello; 2 daughters, Emily (Bill) Moore of Lafayette, Claudia (Jim) Earnest of Rensselaer; 1 foster son, Dennis (Cindy) Tan of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; 1 foster daughter, Susan Tan-Luo of San Francisco, CA; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 3 foster grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 5pm until 8 pm (EDT), Sunday, March 31, 2013, at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am (EDT), Monday, April 1, 2013 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home with the Rev. Jason Metzinger officiating. Burial will follow at Pike Creek Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be given to the Pike Creek Cemetery or the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
