James "Jim" Hallar

James "Jim" Hallar, 98, of Monticello, passed away on June 15, 2025 at IU Health White Memorial Hospital in Monticello.

He was born on September 29, 1926 in Lafayette to the late Frederich Van Buren and Esther Pauline (Kirtley) Hallar. On June 24, 1951 he married Phyllis Marie Cunningham at the Presbyterian Church in Delphi. She preceded him in death on May 8, 2017.

Jim was a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and received his bachelor's degree from Purdue University. As a young man, he raised black Angus cattle with his father and later on his own farm. He sang in the Purdue Glee Club and was a member of 4-H. He won grand champion in 4-H at the state fair. He went on to be a life long farmer and grew grain in addition to his cattle. He farmed together beside Phyllis until they retired.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge and on the board of directors of White County Farm Bureau. Jim was philanthropic and supported the Purdue Phyllis Marie Hallar & James J Hallar Opportunity Scholarship in Agriculture and the Community Foundation of White County Hallar Family Farm LLC. He liked playing cards, especially Euchre. He enjoyed his cat, Boo and Purdue sports, especially basketball. He liked going to the Indy 500 and in later years, watching it on TV.

He is survived by three children, James (Cyndy) Hallar Jr. of Vancouver, WA, Michelle (James) Weathers of Castle Rock, CO and Cindy (Mike) Cook of Battle Ground; ten grandchildren; and many great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Helen Foster, Harriett Anderson, Marge Schumuki and Joyce Cunningham.

In addition to his parents and wife, Phyllis, he was also preceded in death by a grandson.

Visitation will be from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Stephen Quinlan of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello officiating.

Burial will follow in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Michael J Fox Foundation, Monticello Veteran Honor Guard or White County 4-H. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
