Listen to Obituary

Dr. Marvin Michael Van Tiem Jr, 80, of Monticello, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at his residence. He was well known and deeply respected in the Monticello community, where countless friends, patients, and neighbors knew him simply as “Doc.”

He was born on March 22, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Marvin M and Margarite (Fox) Van Tiem. Growing up in Detroit, he played baseball, basketball, and bowled often with his brothers, creating memories that he cherished for a lifetime. On June 6, 1981, he married the former Mary (Powell) Bentley at the Monticello United Methodist Church, and together they built a loving, blended family.

He was a 1963 graduate of St. Thomas Catholic High School in Detroit. He received a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering and worked several years as a mechanical engineer in Port Huron, MI, before changing his career path and enrolling at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC, where he earned his doctorate degree. He then faithfully served the Monticello community as a Chiropractor for 42 years before retiring in 2020, caring for generations of families who will remember his kindness as much as his skill.

He was a member of the Monticello Christian Church, Rotary, Sons of the American Legion, and the American Chiropractic Association. He was an avid golfer, an amazing bowler, and a proud member of a horseshoe club in Florida, where he was known to be quote the ringer. More than anything, he cherished his family and extended family, and they cherished him in return.

In addition to his wife, Mary of Monticello, he is survived by his children, Dr. Renee Van Tiem (Valerie Valenzuela) of CA, Annette Bentley of IN, Suzette (Bill) Adair of SC, Marvin “Tiger” (Victoria) Van Tiem of IN, Steven Bentley of IN, and Amy Wallace of SC; sister, Ida Mae Goodboo of MI; brother, Raymond (Beverly) Van Tiem of MI; fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by brothers, Ronald and Paul Van Tiem, and sister, Genevieve Seagrave.

Visitation will be Friday, November 28, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services celebrating “Doc’s” life at 1:00 p.m. at the Monticello Christian Church with Rev. Tanny Dawson-Snyder officiating.
