Donald Eugene Ross, 81, of Monticello, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette.He was born on December 15, 1934 in Milford to the late George William Ross and Della (Nichols) Ross. On October 4, 1986 he married Phyllis Ross in Des Plaines, IL, and she survives.Don was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees several times and served as chairman of the renovation committee in 1990's. He helped with the community Thanksgiving dinner many years. Don began working at the food pantry when it was located in the basement of the Presbyterian Church. He served as president of the White County Food Pantry for more than a decade and was the instrumental visionary force in developing the White County Food Pantry into the exemplary pantry that it is today. He was a literary volunteer. Don volunteered at Woodlawn Elementary School in the mentoring program as well as volunteering at Eastlawn Elementary School with the special needs students. He was a member of the Sons of the Legion, Moose Lodge, Redmen, and the AMVETS. Don was a member of the Good Fellows and Kiwanis Club in Monticello. Don was an avid golfer, euchre player and Purdue fan. One of his greatest joys in life was to travel to Pasadena when Drew Brees played in the Rose Bowl. He loved his little dog Flicka, a Yorkshire Terrier, his four legged angel. In addition to his wife Phyllis, he is survived by three daughters, Debra (Rich) Goodman of Fowler, Linda (Greg) Toy of The Colony, TX, Karen (Kurt) Meck of Leesburg, IN; four sons, Michael (Mario Hernandez) Ross of Palm Springs, CA, John Ross of Fowler, Terry (Gena) Ross of Indianapolis, Jim (Jean Ann) Ross of Blaine, WA; two sisters, Marilyn (Frank) McIntosh of Lafayette, Nancy Speedy of The Villages, FL; brother-in-law, Ned (Marynelle) Sharp of Lincoln, NB; grandchildren, Kristie, Ryan Katie, Nicole, Emily and Sean.He was also preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Sharp.Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, April 8, 2016 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello and also one hour prior to funeral services celebrating Don's life at 10:30 am, Saturday, April 9, 2016 at the Monticello United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Beeks officiating.Private Burial will follow at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to the White County Food Pantry or to Camp Tecumseh. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
