Dan Burkett

Dan L. Burkett, 78, of Monticello, passed away at 5:00 am, Friday, July 15, 2016 at his residence.He was born on March 17, 1938 in Tipton. On July 20, 1972 he married Phyllis Spencer in Tennessee and she preceded him in death on January 18, 2004.In 1957, Dan bought the pizza shop at Indiana Beach and renamed it Danny's Pizza Garden and operated it until 1980. He owned Dan's Pizza Garden in half of the building where Down the Street Lounge is now. Everyone who knew Dan fondly referred to him as, "Dan, Dan the Pizza Man." Dan then went to work at Schwans until his retirement in 2002. Dan was a member of the Monticello Moose, and Sons of the American Legion. Although Dan dearly enjoyed golf and socializing on the 19th hole with his buddies, what he loved and cherished most was time spent time with his family. He is survived by his children, Angela (Jeff) Pepple of Monticello, Danny L. (Joanna) Burkett, Jr. of Deatsville, AL, Renee Burkett (companion, Jason Scowden) of Delphi, Terye Spencer of Conroe, TX, Dennis (Constance) Blackman of Monticello; siblings, Joan Bless of Madison, WI, Bill Burkett of Walnut Creek, CA, Connie (Grace) Burkett of London, KY; 16 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, but was especially close to his nephew, Jeff Flynn.Also preceding him death were his parents, Lloyd Burkett and Pearl (Beach) Aimutis; son, Jeff Burkett; son-in-law, Stephen Spencer; and a sister, Peggy Flynn.A graveside service celebrating Dan's life will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Yeoman Cemetery with Rev.
