Charlotte 'Char' Melton

Charlotte "Char" R. Melton, 67, of Monticello, passed away at 3:00 pm, Friday, March 31, 2017 at I.U. White Memorial Hospital in Monticello.She was born on July 26, 1949 in Greenup, KY to the late Bill and Goldie (Riley) Kelley and raised in Ohio. Her mother, now Goldie Rawlins, survives in Portsmouth, OH. On February 2, 1987 she married John Melton in Hammond. He preceded her in death on July 25, 2006.Char worked hard most of her life. She owned the Country Kitchen, Char's Restaurant, and Char's Cafe in Hammond. After moving to Monticello worked at the Shoe Dept in Monticello for over 23 years. She also liked to help Melissa in her store at Cornerstone Antiques. Char loved music and she loved her birds. Her parrots were her babies. Char was a good and giving person who enjoyed many friendships and formed close bonds with online friends. Most of all, she was a wonderful mother and grandmother and deeply loved her children and grandchildren.In addition to her mother, she is survived by children, Melissa (Robert) Scott, Steven (Shannon) Russell, and Michael Russell all of Monticello; siblings, Carol Shump of Portsmouth, OH, Billy Kelley of Dona Vista, FL, Johnny (Gail) Kelley of Rochester, Donald Kelley of Momence, IL, and Ronnie Kelley of Monticello; sixteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.In addition to her father and husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, David Kelley and step father Arthur Rawlins.Visitation will be on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello from noon until the time of services at 2:00 pm celebrating Char's life. Pastor Paul Storm will officiate services.Private burial will follow at Hughes Cemetery.Char's family would like to thank our local hospital and entire staff for the compassion and excellent care she received. In gratitude to and appreciation of I.U. Health White Memorial Hospital, memorial contributions are encouraged to the I.U. Health White Memorial Foundation.
