Betty J. Allen Begley, 91, of Monticello, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at St. Anthony's Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Lafayette.
She was born on May 9, 1930 in Monticello to the late Lewis R. and Alta (Meredith) Bunnell. Betty's first marriage was to John E. Allen in 1947 and together they had five children. They later divorced in 1973 and Betty then married John Begley in 1993. He preceded her in death on August 9, 2011.
Betty was a life long resident of Monticello and attended Twin Lakes High School. She spent much of her younger years caring for her sister, Marjorie who had Cerebral Palsy, helping her mother who ran a boarding house and working at a local restaurant as a waitress. Betty was a devoted daughter, sister, and mother. She retired from Alloy Rods where she worked as a Die Maker. There she met John Begley who she later married. She and John worked along side each other for many years maintaining and managing the Lake Hill Trailer Park.
When Betty was younger, she enjoyed writing poetry, fishing, riding horses, singing and swimming. She was a fan of Shirley Temple, Doris Day, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin and Barry Manilow. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW in Monticello. She was very charitable and donated to a variety of charities over the years.
She is survived by her children, Larry (Debbie) Allen of Monticello, Karen Sue (Larry) Dill of Wolcott, Ken (Lori) Allen of Brookston, Jack (Jeni) Begley of Delphi, Joe (Diane) Begley of Priceville, AL; 17 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
In addition to her parents and husband, John, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Roxann Knoll, sons, Kris Allen, and William Begley; grandson, Dexter Knoll, Jr.: siblings, Irene Foreman, Helen Campbell, Louise Kinnard, Maxine Lafond, John Bunnell, Eugene Bunnell, Walter Bunnell, Lloyd Bunnell, and Marjorie Bunnell.
Visitation will be Monday, April 25, 2022 from 5 pm until the time of services at 7 pm at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello with Harold Rutledge officiating.
Burial will be Tuesday at 10:30 am in the Wolcott Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Aktion Club. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
