Robert Earl Ropp, 87, of Monticello, passed away at 7:00 am, Friday, May 13, 2016 at Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette.He was born on March 26, 1929 in Hammond to the late Ernie and Julie Ropp. He married the former Violet King and she preceded him in death.Robert was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving in Korea.He was employed as a switchman for the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad from which he retired.He built his cottage on Lake Shafer in the late 1950's. Following his retirement in the mid 90's he moved down and lived permanently on the lake.His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and sitting by the campfire. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, AM Vets, and the American Legion, all of Monticello.Survivors include his sons, James Ropp of Crown Point, Robin Ropp of Cedar Lake; stepson, Kenny (Lisa) King of Huntington Beach, CA; nine grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren.He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Williams; son, Ronald Gene Ropp, and his sister, Betty.The family has coordinated a celebration of life gathering from 2pm until 4pm (EDT), Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the Am Vets located at 219 Northwestern Ave. in Monticello. Military rites will be rendered there.According to Robert's wishes he will be cremated. Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello is entrusted with care.Memorial contributions may be given to the Monticello Veteran's Honor Guard.Online condolences and expressions of sympathy may be extended at www.springerfuneralhome.com.
