Richard C. Roach

Richard "Dick" Carl Roach, 83, peacefully passed away on April 5, 2018 at White Oaks Health Campus in Monticello, IN. Dick was born December 14, 1934 to the late Harley and Maude (Bierrum) Roach of Jefferson Township, Carroll County. He attended and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Monticello in 1952. After which he attended Purdue University and studied Agricultural Economics for one semester. Later, he returned to Purdue and finished a University Short Course in Animal Husbandry in 1954. On December 30, 1956 Dick married his high school sweetheart, Gretchen MaHanna. Gretchen had been working in Chicago as a dress designer for Adrian Tabin. He served as a Commanding Officer of both the Rensselaer and Monticello National Guard Units as well as one year on the Battalion Staff in Logansport as a Training Officer. Dick attained the rank of Captain and resigned from the Guard after serving 13 years. Dick was a fourth generation farmer in Jefferson Township and specialized in the production of grain and cattle. His son, Rick joined the operation after completing college and he is the 5th generation to till in the northern Carroll County soil. Dicks grandson Richard continues the legacy into the 6th generation. Dick spent many years serving the citizens of both Carroll and White Counties - communities he grew up in and loved. He served as Director and President of the former Farmers Elevator Company in Monticello, as well as a member and President of the Twin Lakes School Building Improvement Corporation. Dick was a director at the State and Savings Bank in Monticello and was also a Carroll County 4-H Dairy superintendent and was a member of the Purdue University Agricultural Alumni. He served two terms as Carroll County councilman, District 1 and was appointed director of the Northwest Solid Waste District. He was a member and elder for the Monticello Presbyterian Church and also attended Oak Grove Church. Dick loved watching sports, especially football and basketball. He played high school football and was a member of the varsity basketball team from 1950-52. He also was a walk-on member of the Purdue University football team during the fall semester of 1952. Most importantly Dick always found time to love, support and nurture his immediate family and friends. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his quick wit, contagious laugh and his unbelievable ability to relay a humorous yarn. When he engaged you in conversation, he had an uncanny ability to make you feel that you were the most important person in the room. He knew to ask about you, before ever turning the conversation to himself. This loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather is survived by his children, Robin Roach Gilley (husband, John) of Aumsville, Oregon, Richard Carl Roach II (wife, Sharon) of Monticello, Indiana, and Raegan Kaler (husband, Whitney) of Goldsboro North Carolina. "Gramps" as he was affectionately called by his grandchildren, is survived by six granddaughters Gretchen York, Elizabeth York (husband, Ben), Courtney Dyer (husband, Kyle), Briana Roach, Hanna Bedingfield (husband, Caleb) and Hunter Kaler; two grandsons Richard Roach III (wife Stephanie) and Harman Kaler; and four great grandsons Braxton Dyer, Barrick Dyer, Ezra Roach (and a brother or sister due in September), and Asher Bedingfield.
