Marlyn J. Smith, 85, of Monticello, passed away at 12:35 am, Thursday, April 15, 2021 at White Oak Health Campus.
She was born on October 3, 1935 in Indianapolis to the late Newby Dale and Valeria (Tumey) Apple.
Marlyn spent her youth in Indianapolis and Carmel. She moved to the Monticello area in 1948, when her parents bought Riverview Park at Lowes Bridge. She attended Buffalo High School graduating 2nd in her class in 1953. This is where she met Tom Bose. They married in 1954, and had four children. The family moved to Indianapolis in 1962.
Marlyn was a nurse. She began her nurses training at the IU School of Nursing in Indianapolis. Raising her children was her main priority so her nurses training took a while. She received her Bachelors Degree in 1971. She put her nursing skills to use for many years in Indianapolis working at Methodist Hospital, an allergy doctor for a few years and later working for manufacturing plants as a company nurse at RCA, Ford, and Rolls-Royce Allison. Being the clinic manager at Barrington Clinic was also on her resume. Marlyn retired from corporate nursing in 1997 and moved back to Monticello to take care of her mother. She remained in Monticello to be near her family.
Marlyn also gave 21 years to serving her country in the Army Reserves. She was assigned to the 337th General Hospital based out of Ft. Benjamin Harrison. Marlyn retired as a Lt. Colonel in 2001.
Marlyn was a member of the Monticello Christian Church and attended faithfully until her health declined. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
In her later years, she enjoyed traveling with friends, doing genealogy research on her family and enjoying the company of her beloved dogs. At one time, she had three dogs. She loved family get together's and going to all family related events including weddings and graduations. She was smart, funny, loving and an amazing mother, grandmother and friend to all.
She is survived by her children, Tom Bose Jr. of Brownsburg, Tammy Wagner of rural Monticello, Barry (Mary) Bose of Morgantown, and Bill (Ruthie) Bose of Speedway; four grandchildren, Erica (Dwayne) Bruce of Speedway, Emily Bose of Speedway, Nathan Wagner of rural Monticello and Nikki Sheard of Monticello; a great grandson, Lincoln Bruce of Speedway; and brother, Don (Patsy) Apple of Monticello.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 from 11am until the time of the funeral services celebrating Marlyn's life at 1pm at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello with her nephew, Kenneth Apple officiating.
Burial will follow in Hughes Cemetery with full military rites rendered there.
Memorial contributions may be given to a humane society of the donor's choice with envelopes available at the funeral home. Donations may also be sent directly to the entity of choice.
