Alberta J. Gwin, 89, of Monticello, passed away at 6:03 pm, Saturday, December 23, 2017 at I.U. Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette.She was born on May 25, 1928 in Rensselaer to the late William and Lula (Hickman) Phares. On September 8, 1956 she married Marvin Gwin in Mount Ayr and he preceded her in death September 26, 2014.She was a graduate of Rensselaer High School.Prior to her son's birth, Alberta worked at Farmers & Merchants National Bank in Rensselaer. Once Marvin was born, she was primarily a homemaker and assisted her husband, Marvin working on the farm. She operated the tractors, hauled grain, ran after parts, and did everything she could to ensure the farm operated smoothly. She gardened, canned, froze produce, and loved preparing the meals.Alberta was a member of Pike Creek Church of the Brethren where she was active in the women's fellowship, was the church historian, and assisted with church dinners. She loved sewing. She sewed and quilted for the church and made better Barbie Doll and Cabbage Patch Kid clothes for her nieces than could have been purchased commercially. Alberta always had a positive outlook and to the end was optimistic about returning to live on the farm. She cherished her husband, son and grandchildren, and played a major support role for all of them. She is survived by her son, Marvin D. (Nancy) Gwin Jr. of Avon; sister, Ardith "Kay" Lambert of The Villages, FL; sister-in-law, Shelia Siebert of Watseka, IL; and grandsons, Caleb and Lucas Gwin both of Avon.Preceding her in death were an infant daughter, Rochelle Gwin; sister, Louine Malone; and stepbrothers, James and Charles Siebert.Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, December 29, 2017 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello.Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Jason Metzinger of the Pike Creek Church of the Brethren officiating.Private burial will be in Weston Cemetery in Rensselaer.Memorial contributions may be given to the Pike Creek Church of the Brethren or to the White County Food Pantry with envelopes available at the funeral home.Messages of condolence may be extended at www.springerfuneralhome.com
